From clothes to clay
After working in the fashion industry for over a decade between Paris and London, Justine decides to take a chance on ceramic in 2020. « I’ve always been drawn to Art, whether it was Fashion, Painting, Photography, and I think they are fabulous ways to tell a story. It took me almost 30 years to find the medium that suits me ».
Following a three-months workshop and a lot of research and self-taught practice, Justine decides to start her own brand Beramics - which is the contraction of her family name Beral and ceramics - in 2021. « It started as a joke, and after a while I figured the name was easy to remember and pronounce in different languages ».
She then started working on her commercial pieces, mostly tableware, her first collaborations with chefs and restaurants, and her first personal projects. « Finding your own aesthetic takes a lot of time and patience, and I have made several mistakes that were all very formative, whether it was about my artistic identity or about commercial strategy. The perks of ceramic and self-employment is that you never cease to learn and experiment. »
Blending her passion for drawing with her new-found one for pottery, Justine’s pieces are designs that carry a pure, balanced and timeless aesthetic, filled with poetry. « I only buy objects that make me feel something, whether it’s clothes or an art piece, and that’s exactly what I try to recreate through the pots I make. It could be thanks to the colours, the shapes, or even the drawings. When my work moves someone, it’s the greatest reward ».
You can find Justine’s work exclusively at her atelier Beramics, 19 rue Clauzel, 75009 Paris.
